Our connection with the Armed Forces dates back to our founding in 1899 as a hospital for officers returning from the Second Boer War. We are proud to have upheld this commitment by providing subsidies for all uninsured Service Personnel and their spouse, civil partner, widow and widower.

We are committed to helping as many veterans as possible by offering grants for medical treatment at the Hospital.

We would like to reassure you that our commitment to help veterans who are unable to receive treatment in a timely fashion remains as strong now as throughout our 120-year history.

The Centre for Veterans’ Health currently has three core pillars of activity:

  • The Pain Management Programme (PMP): our free, award-winning programme has also been recognised by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) as an outstanding practice. It exists to help veterans manage acute and chronic pain, helping them get back to living their lives to the fullest.

  • Military Grants for free surgical care: The Centre for Veterans’ Health means-tested grants programme provides 100% grants to uninsured Service or ex-Service Personnel, (including reserves). This enables them to access the Hospital completely free of charge.

  • 20% Discount off Hospital fees: All Service or ex-Service Personnel (including reserves), without medical insurance are entitled to a 20% discount on their hospital bill. This is regardless of rank or length of service. It also extends to their spouses/civil partners and includes widowers and widows.

Who can apply for a Military Grant?

All service personnel and retired service personnel of His Majesty’s Armed Forces. Temporary, reserve or territorial Commissions in His Majesty’s Armed Forces or in the British Indian Armed Forces. Spouses, widows and widowers of any of the persons described above.
