Disabled Facility Grants DFG

Updated on

Casework Support Guidance:

Should a beneficiary require adaptations to their home the first route is always for the beneficiary to apply for a DFG, as all statutory provision must be investigated prior to applying for funding from the Military Assistance Providers – this is done by via applying to the relevant Local Authority.

Even if the beneficiary is certain they will be rejected on financial grounds they must still apply, and the rejection letter can be provided as evidence for the AP’s. Sometimes beneficiaries will receive a partial award, in which case the Military AP’s can be approached for support with the balance.

Whilst the principle behind DFG’s is the same across the country, each Local Authorities application process may vary slightly so please refer to the relevant website.

We will also require an Occupational Therapy Report, recommending the specific adaptation or equipment.

You could get a grant from your council if you’re disabled and need to make changes to your home. For example if you:

  • are physically disabled
  • have a learning disability
  • have age-related needs
  • are autistic
  • have a cognitive impairment, like dementia
  • have a progressive condition, like motor neurone disease
  • have a terminal illness
  • have a mental health condition

You might need to:

  • widen doors and install ramps or grab rails
  • improve access to rooms and facilities, for example a stair lift, or level access shower
  • improve access to your garden
  • build an extension, for example a downstairs bedroom
  • provide a heating system suitable for your needs
  • adapt heating or lighting controls to make them easier to use

A DFG won't affect any benefits you get.
