This document provides suggested content themes for Digital Marketing Volunteers to use in their social media posts, or on microsites.
You may want to consider using https://bitly.com/ that you can register with for free, to shorten URLs for social media posts and keep them looking a little tidier.
Content themes
- Services/ ‘get help’ theme - ssafa.org.uk/get-help
- Brand/about us, includes ‘SSAFA Stories’/case studies - ssafa.org.uk/about-us
- Volunteer for SSAFA -ssafa.org.uk/volunteer
- Support, fundraise for SSAFA, fundraise ssafa.org.uk/support-us
- For events - look at our Challenge Events page at ssafa.org.uk/support-us/challenge-events and see if there's anything local, or any of the bigger national/global events you can share and encourage people to sign up for
- SSAFA Store (SSAFA online shop) – ssafastore.org.uk/ There are often products linked to particular events/dates of interest.
These are all general, but you can link to your own branch where possible. For example, speak to the branch and ask for info in relation to:
- Services – supporting older veterans, disability support, mental wellbeing; examples of how we help veterans in Lanarkshire.
- About us – general stats about your Branch. ‘We have x number of volunteers, covering these areas…….’
- Volunteer for SSAFA – examples of people in each role, with pictures and a quote from the volunteer.
- Support, fundraise for SSAFA – share info and opportunities at any upcoming events for branch.
Other themes to consider:
- Military history (on this day etc.)
- #FactFriday, such as facts about SSAFA history/stats about volunteering (taken from Annual Report etc.)
- #ThrowbackThursday
Where to find content
More information on places to find content are listed below, don’t forget the content library/lightbox folders have images/videos to go alongside these posts/stories:
- SSAFA website (brand, services mainly, also volunteer recruitment). Look at News section. Using publications (such as the Annual Report 2024) for general info and what we are doing. This is important as we want to showcase what we are doing and how we are helping people.
- Google search and selecting “news” (for community, armed forces community, local community)
- Facebook main page is facebook.com/SSAFAOfficial – look at what is being posted currently, but you can also use the Search engine to search for posts to do with certain topics such as volunteering, SSAFA history etc
- forces.net often has topical and heart-warming news stories that may be relevant for your audience (just be sure to read the full article to make sure it’s appropriate to share on our channels, avoiding mentions of other charities' fundraising etc.
- The army.mod.uk/news-and-events/, royalnavy.mod.uk/news-and-latest-activity/ and raf.mod.uk/news/ news pages; like forces.net, not everything will be relevance or of interest to our audience but have a look for stories about the Armed Forces community, forces families etc. as these can be nice to share when you have space
- Facebook – look at other branch pages - seeing what they are posting and piggybacking, seeing who they are engaging with and replicating. Some examples of varied and relevant content can be found at facebook.com/DerbyshireSSAFA, facebook.com/SSAFA.Fife & facebook.com/ssafaGrampian.
- Browse your Facebook page's news feed, interact with other pages/organisations and potentially share their posts if relevant to your audience. Note: If you want to post based on what you’ve seen on other pages please don’t just copy and paste that post - either ‘share’ the original post from the other page, or create your own post with your own wording.
Content specific to your branch/area
- Google searches and then select news. Type in ‘SSAFA in <county>’.
- Google search ‘British armed forces <county> news ‘.
- Google search ‘British military <county> news'.
- Look at local organisations/community pages on Facebook for relevant/appropriate posts you could share (such as local citizens advice/council/veteran’s breakfasts club).
- Liaise with your Branch team to suggest/find info about.
- Volunteer stories (informal and short or longer form).
- ‘Meet the Team’ – photo and information about individuals within the branch that are comfortable to share.
- Client case studies.
- Examples of successful cases (does not have to include names).
- Upcoming events or branch initiatives.
