Mark Tyrrell-Smith, who has been the Branch Chair and a Caseworker at Devon Branch for the last two and a half years and has recently been appointed the Regional Chair for the South West, chats with Kate Marshall (CEM) about an exciting community engagement initiative undertaken by Devon Branch throughout 2023-2024.
SSAFA Devon uses the Gordon Messenger Centre (GMC) to hold most of its meetings, AGM, inductions, and events. The GMC is an MOD facility, that supports the local armed forces community, specifically Royal Marines, tri service veterans, and their families, through a variety of regular or demand led events, activities, and groups.
The GMC previously received feedback asking for external spaces that offer all year-round access for outdoor classes, contemplation, relaxation, and small events. In July 2023 the Branch was asked if SSAFA might be interested in a project to provide better outdoor facilities.
Below is the report mentioned by Mark in the video. The report was produced to inform and update the SSAFA Finance Committee, on the initial outcomes of the social investment trial, conducted by SSAFA Devon. It covers the key aspects the initiative including designing, building and delivering the June Best Sanctuary Garden.
