Why we want you
Our branches are an integral part of SSAFA’s success. With a visible presence in local communities, they raise vital awareness of and funds for our work. They also provide a supportive and enriching community for our volunteers. As branch chair you will work with staff and volunteers to build a vision and plan for the branch, driving forward a range of impactful activities to promote the breadth of SSAFA’s work. You will also build an inclusive and collaborative community for all volunteers, building a sense of connection and shared purpose.
What you will be doing
- Providing leadership for the branch, with responsibility and accountability for branch activities and branch volunteers.
- Driving an impactful programme of awareness raising activities so that potential beneficiaries, volunteers and supporters are aware of SSAFA, the support we can offer and the benefits of being involved.
- Act as a local ambassador for SSAFA, building a presence in local communities and growing SSAFA’s networks to increase reach and further our strategic aims.
- Providing timely reports and information to SSAFA’s central office
- In collaboration with the Regional Engagement Manager and branch executive, organise and chair a range of meetings and gatherings, including regular branch meetings, AGMs and social events, to progress the branch’s vision and plans, ensuring transparency and keeping people connected and involved.
- Work closely with the community engagement manager to recruit, welcome, induct, support, and manage branch volunteers in line with SSAFA policies. You will be dedicated to delivering high quality volunteering experiences, through support and supervision, ensuring volunteers feel valued, can understand the impact of their work and have access to required support
- Collaborate with colleagues across SSAFA to ensure regular, relevant and engaging communication for branch volunteers, also sharing stories of branch activity and success to be included in wider organisational communications.

- Motivating leadership with an ability to lead a team of volunteers and embed a positive and inclusive culture.
- Friendly and approachable
- Great written and verbal communication skills
- Basic IT Brilliant organisation and prioritisation skills
- Willingness to learn and use SSAFA systems, specifically our Volunteer Management System, GoAssemble
