Volunteer Commitment

The purpose of this commitment is to assure you that SSAFA values our volunteers and to demonstrate our ambition to make your volunteer experience a positive, enjoyable and rewarding one.

This commitment sets out our hopes and expectations of volunteers and what volunteers can expect from us, underpinned by our vision, mission, values, and standards.

The expectations are binding in honour only, and in no way does this commitment aim to act as a legal contract or establish an employee or worker relationship between you and SSAFA, now or at any time in the future..

Our commitment to you as a volunteer

We are committed to making your experience of volunteering with us safe, enjoyable, and rewarding.

We will:

  • Ensure we offer meaningful, manageable, and mutually beneficial volunteering roles and opportunities.
  • Treat you with fairness, equality, dignity, respect and in line with our values and standards
  • Communicate openly and respectfully in line with our values and standards.
  • Provide all training required for your role as well as ongoing opportunities to develop.
  • Ensure you are supported within your role with appropriate resources, a named Volunteer Manager and regular support and supervision.
  • Encourage and listen to your feedback and use it where possible to improve the volunteer experience.
  • Value your time and commitment and recognise your achievements.
  • Resolve any complaints, issues, or concerns promptly and fairly.
  • Reimburse reasonable expenses incurred as a result of your volunteering.
  • Provide appropriate insurance cover for your designated volunteer role when conducting authorised volunteer activities.
  • Keep your data safe in line with our Data Protection policy.
  • Follow the policies, procedures, and standards of the organisation in relation to volunteers.  We will keep them up to date and inform you of any changes.
  • Offer flexibility within volunteering opportunities and recognise that you may need or want to take breaks from or leave your volunteering role and support you to do so.

Your commitment to us as a volunteer

You will:

  • Carry out your volunteer role to the best of your abilities.
  • Follow the guidelines set out in SSAFA’s Code of Conduct and processes.
  • Treat everyone with fairness, equality, dignity, and respect in line with our values and standards.
  • Demonstrate our BRAVE standards in all you do and act as an ambassador for the organisation.
  • Communicate openly and respectfully and in line with our values and standards.
  • Complete all training and checks required for your volunteer role/s.
  • Work collaboratively with your SSAFA colleagues, keep in touch with your volunteer manager at mutually agreeable times, and take part in support and supervision sessions.  
  • Submit expenses claims and all relevant paperwork promptly within agreed timescales.
  • Agree to work within the boundaries of the volunteer role description and recognise and share limitations.
  • Follow our policies and procedures, especially those on confidentiality, data protection and safeguarding.
  • Maintain the good name and reputation of SSAFA, the Armed Forces Charity throughout your time as a volunteer with the organisation.
