Vetting Check Guidance

As the volunteer role you are considering applying for involves working with children/young people and/or adults at risk, it is not covered by the provisions in the Rehabilitation of Offenders Act 1974 and the Exceptions Order 1975.

The following roles require a vetting check:

Role Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check level
Caseworker Enhanced (children and adults barred lists)
Visitor Enhanced
In-Reach Volunteer Enhanced (children and adults barred lists)

Not all cautions and convictions will be disclosed during a criminal record check. There is guidance about what cautions and convictions will be removed, or “filtered”, from disclosure checks on the DBS website.

Please note the level of check required for your role and consider if your check is likely to return information.

If you think that your check is likely to return information, please arrange a confidential conversation to discuss this further, or email [email protected].

SSAFA treats all volunteer applicants fairly. If you have a criminal record, it won't necessarily stop you from becoming a volunteer. We’ll consider each person’s circumstances individually.
