Health and Safety Policy and Procedures
Updated onArticleSSAFA, the Armed Forces charity, the Soldiers', Sailors', and Airmen's Families Association, is a UK charity that provides lifelong support to serving men and women and veterans from the British Armed Forces and their families or dependents. Anyone who is currently serving or has ever served in the Royal Navy, British Army or Royal Air Force and their families, both regulars and reserves, is eligible for their help. SSAFA operated from a central office in London with other premises across the United Kingdom and overseas. The SSAFA - Controller has ultimate responsibility for health and safety. Day to day management responsibilities are delegated to managers listed in the responsibility table included in this document. There are site managers in place at each of the operating sites. The SSAFA - Controller has determined that we should operate without putting the health, safety or welfare of any employee, service user, volunteer or any other person at risk. To meet this objective, we have prepared a health and safety policy and put in place arrangements as set out in this document aimed at ensuring the continued health safety and welfare of those people as regards our activities. Accepting that we cannot transfer our responsibility for managing health, safety and welfare within the workplace to others we have retained Peninsula to help us meet this objective. They provide information and guidance on the effective management of health and safety, conduct routine audits and act as a source of advice and information.

Procuring software, services, platforms or web functions that use AI
Updated onArticleThere is no doubt that AI (artificial intelligence) has its place in business and, indeed, SSAFA. And while AI and AI components have been around for many years, potentially already existing in software, services or platforms in use at SSAFA, it is only in the last year that such advances require a dedicated policy and related guidance. Specifically, the recent emergence of LLM AI (large language models) like Chat GPT (generative pre-trained transformer) and similar platforms, that essentially have been trained on most of the world's online content, and can understand human written sentences, have brought AI into the mainstream. Such AI models are able to learn and adapt based on what (text/content) is fed in by millions of daily users. And because of this, special care needs to be taken to understand how each AI product works, where the data might be located, whether input data can ever be output again, plus any management controls that might exist. This policy should serve as the minimum that takes place when seeking out software, services, platforms or websites with modern AI or machine learning capabilities.
